A consultation with your periodontist will outline what your needs include. While a gum lift can be done using a scalpel, with the availability of laser surgery, the process can be completed with much less discomfort for the patient.
A gum lift can involve eliminating the appearance of a “gummy” smile by reducing the amount of gum tissue; or a gum lift may allow the periodontist to reshape gum tissue giving your smile a more even appearance. This can be completed by cutting the gums, removing some underlying bone, and replacing the gum tissue.
These procedures are often completed using a local anesthetic; however, depending on the extent of surgery involved, some type of sedation may be recommended. With any type of sedation, the patient will need transportation to and from their appointment.
There may be some discomfort following your procedure, an over the counter analgesic may suffice or a stronger drug will be provided to help control pain. Depending on the extent of treatment or the patient’s oral condition, an antibiotic may be prescribed.
When a soft tissue laser is used to reduce or reshape gum tissue, there are certain advantages over the use of a scalpel. Much less cutting is needed; and the laser actually seals the opening promoting faster healing time.
Patients undergoing any kind of gum surgery will usually be encouraged to return home to rest for the remainder of the day. Staying quiet will help control bleeding; swelling of the treated area may occur. Rinsing with warm water is recommended.
Follow the advice given by your periodontist regarding when you can resume brushing the affected area; brush lightly to keep it clean and avoid plaque build-up. Soft foods for a few days are best.
There may be some numbness in the surgical area, but that should go away. Follow your dentist’s instructions for postoperative treatment; a follow-up visit may be recommended. You can resume your normal diet and lifestyle as indicated by your periodontist.
