An Overview of Gum Disease and Its Causes
To put in the simplest terms possible, gum disease means that gingival tissue is inflamed and infected. This is most commonly caused by tartar buildup, which is calcified plaque. Tartar, filled with bacteria, builds up along the gum-line and inflames gum tissue. Exposure to irritants like tartar makes the gums very susceptible to infection. As tartar accumulates, the gums respond by pulling away from teeth. This exposes the roots of teeth to bacteria and debris while also providing more surface area for tartar to build up. Since gums support teeth, recession of the gingiva along with tartar buildup will loosen teeth. If this condition is untreated, patients will eventually lose their teeth.
On top of tartar buildup, other contributing factors affect gum health including hormonal fluctuations, tobacco use, and genetic predispositions. At the onset of periodontal disease, patients should receive gum treatment as soon as possible. Deep cleanings such as scaling and root planing are often necessary to remove tartar below the gum line and infected gingival tissue. Patients will also need to commit to thorough and meticulous oral hygiene that includes proper brushing and daily flossing.
