Veneers are thin covers applied to a tooth’s front surface. They can be made of either porcelain or composite resin materials.
Veneers are not as invasive as crowns because their application leaves your original tooth intact. Your dentist will remove about a half millimeter of enamel from the surface of your tooth so that it will bond better with the veneer. The veneer is then applied, effectively improving your smile.
You’ll likely need anesthesia for the application of veneers, but a local anesthetic usually works just fine. For the veneer to work well, you must have enough enamel on the tooth to form a good bond.
What are Crowns?
A crown differs from a veneer in that it covers the entire tooth. This means your dentist will have to file down more of your tooth’s exterior to prepare it for a crown.
Typically, your dentist removes any decay from the tooth before they make a crown. Depending on the degree of decay, your tooth may actually need to be built up to support the crown.
This procedure will also require a local anesthetic to ensure you don’t feel any discomfort. Your dentist will additionally make a mold or digital scan of your tooth to ensure the crown fits perfectly. A long-term crown may take time to manufacture. So, you may get a temporary crown in the interim.
Veneers vs. Crowns: The Cost
According to the American Cosmetic Dentistry Organization, the price of veneers depends on the material. Porcelain veneers are more expensive, but they also last longer.
Composite veneers are less expensive. The price for these is more comparable to the cost of a crown, which varies depending on the material, the amount of prep work, and the size of your tooth.
Of course, the cost of any of these options is more if you require other procedures, like a root canal.
